To mark the occasion BaMMOT held a running day to bring together the municipal buses that formed WMPTE at their premises at Wythall. Members of the Merseyside Transport Trust took along Leyland Panther 1054 in MPTE livery to help them celebrate and have a nice day out too. Sunday 11 October 2009: West Midlands PTE like the others celebrate 40 years of existance in 2009. This time it was the turn of Huggin's (Wirral) that gave up operation of buses and coaches after 45 years of service. This day coincided with the end of the school term. As can be seen from these pictures, right up to the last day, the vehicles were all clean and smartly turned out, a credit to the operation which will be a sad loss to the enthusiast fraternity. These shots show the final departures to the schools, I thought it safer to get them here as opposed to photographing them at the schools etc., and got chance to photo the contents of the yard and workshops. Some vehicles had been here a long time like ex Barrow Corporation Talbot E564MAC and I didnt get a pic of the ex Trent (?) Metrorider. Some of the ex Dublin Olypimans have been prepared and some even so recently painted that they hadnt even entered service yet. The revolutionary 78 seat rear engined bus with the entrance door at the front was to pave the way for bus design of the future. Wallasey Corporation was swallowed up by the 'New' Merseyside Passenger Transport Executive in December 1969 and fortunately in 1976 this bus was put aside for preservation. 50 years on, to that day, No1 was brought out to re-enact that historic date, along with former MPTE 1003 which was the last new bus delivered to Wallasey's bus garage in Seaview Road, which closed in 1986 and was demolished the following year to make way for a supermarket. Together they roamed the streets of Wallasey for a couple of hours, working routes 1, 2, 14 and 16 which the Atlanteans worked when new. Due to other commitments, I couldn't ride around, but managed to see them set off from Seacombe, get back to Seacombe later on and got down to New Brighton for the final run. I imagine that some viewers were not even a thought in their parent's head at this stage. I know what I did....... I witnessed the biggest upheaval in public transport since the 1930's. Gone was the old order of regulated services paid for by the taxpayer, giving cheap fares and quite a plentiful service to most areas unlike today. From the 26th October 1986 all that was swept away, a new day dawned and we woke up to DE-REGULATION. From this day bus services would have to make a profit or would not run, except for some services which were deemed 'socially necessary'. Overnight services were decimated and bus fares increased dramatically as the new regime took over. MPTE buses became Merseybus ( a new at arms length company) and Ribble on Merseyside became North Western and Crosville became err Crosville!. New bus companies came onto the scene some survived others withered away, even old favourites like Crosville, Ribble, Merseybus/MTL got bought out and the names disappeared, don't get me wrong, I believe the concept was flawed but services could have been more productive than they were and De-Reg certainly made the scene more interesting for the enthusiast. Well 22 years on and were have all the old and interesting buses gone? I feel sorry for the young enthusiast these days, never having travelled on Leyland PD2's, PDR's, AN68, Daimler Fleetlines and Bristol Lodekka's, RE's and MW's in normal service like I did! This changed today, for one day only, friends and guests invited by Mr Morris travelled back in time to 1986, using former MPTE Leyland Atlantean 1003, which was new to Seaview Road Garage in Wallasey, this garage was also one of the casualties of De-Reg having closed it's doors to services for the final time the previous evening. 1003 performed a bit of an impromtu re-enactment of some of the services from that day in operation around Wallasey. The plan was to run from Liverpool to New Brighton as a 429, then route 1 to Woodside, 191 to Seacombe, 15 to Liscard and then via route 146 to Saughall Massie where the final service would be a 45A to Woodside. Unfortunately due to technical difficulties (Railspeak) the lost mileage form had to be thrown in for the 191 and the No1 ran as a 1E as far as Seacombe Ferry to get back on schedule. A splendid day was had by all, with some very spirited driving, to re-live the heady days of our mispent youth. Thanks to The Crow for providing the bus and the friends for the entertainment! Two 'new' buses appeared from the MTT for this event, Bristol RELL6G/Park Royal 2025 and Leyland Panther/MCW 1054, unfortunately the latter had to be taken out of service due to coolant problems. This shows the quality of restorations and authenticity as I would imagine that this also happened when they went into service in 1968! After being stored for over 20 years, these little niggling problems are bound to occur. The Ribble group supplied Leyland National 831 and Bristol RE 338. There were also other visiting vehicles, of which I didnt manage to get to study in detail .... Birkenhead & District Fleetline, Blackpool Atlantean, Barrow Atlantean, Leyland Tiger PS1 amongst others. The highlight of the day for me was seeing 1054 out, although I didnt get a ride out on her .... it was just fantastic at seeing her in use. I would like to thank the organisers and people involved for another splendid day. ]]> Thu Jan 1 1970 Liverpool Airport 75th Birthday Celebration http://m28371m.fotopic.net/c1538776.html June 29th 2008 The Merseyside Transport Trust were asked to provide a bus service linking Liverpool City Centre and John Lennon Airport via the original terminal buildings which is now the Marriot Hotel. I was involved with driving one of the buses, which features heavily. At the old terminal buildings was held an Aviation fair and display of old Aircraft as well as other items such as old cars and Fire Engines/Police and Ambulances. At the display was one of the old Airporter Buses a Leyland Royal Tiger, owned by MTT and having work done by Arriva after being stored for more than 20 years, unfortunately, she was not ready in time to be able to transport passengers, but was a static display. I follow it's progress from Demolition to Opening. UPDATE It is 13th December 2008 and it is the opening day of the 'New' Floral, I hadn't realised this, but went down to New Brighton to get some general shots at sunset. So this album is virtually complete, a little piece of Wallasey's fine history has been completed with the transformation from old to new. My pictures taken from the 26.03.2007 until today 13.12.2008. I must admit I liked the old old building, plenty more character .... Now it is time to photograph the rest of the old civic buildings, not only of Wallasey, but of the whole of Wirral, because our councillors, the ones we pay to run our amenities have decided to close and sell everything they can !! They probably wont be here this time next year .... Birkenhead & Wallasey Libraries as well as a great deal of other buildings.... There are certain pockets of this housing that have lasted, but not many. I have seen many up and down the country but never photographed them until now!! There is a road in Liverpool, were the houses are double deck pre-fabs with tin roofs, Princess Drive, Huyton. This initial collection is the only full and complete housing estate to survive as far as I know in 2008, although as you can see many of the houses have been refurbished and modernised, their are quite a lot that look completely original, this estate is in Overpool, Ellesmere Port, Cheshire. My earliest association with the company was travelling up to my Nan's on a Saturday, using the F34 which at the time was run by Bristol Lodekka's, MW's & RE's. Later on gaining Seddon Pennine's, Leyland Nationals & Bristol VRT's. We also went to Chester on days out using the C1 (never went by train!) by which time it was run by very fast DVL's!!! Crosville will always remain my favourite bus operator. This section was originally going to contain photographs, showing the present operations of what was once the might CMS, but I have decided that I want it to be an archive of what once was ..... The green things. If you want to see the present things running on the old network, look into other sections, Merseyside etc ... Leicester Metro Scania Cobham DM999 at Cobham Cobham RT604 Cobham (Wisley) RM1 & RML2760 (First and Last) at Cobham 2004 Fanshaw Crescent, Ware Hertford Hertford GS62 Chapmore End Hertford This ought to be preserved, former LT finnial bus stop in Hitchin, with SNB312 in view. RM50, Finsbury Park RMF1254 at RM40 celebration. This vehicle had a period on loan to Liverpool Corporation. FRM1 at RM40 RM1368 at RM40 Crosville CRG163 Crosville SLL620 former Birkenhead 147 was new with a top deck! I can't remember whether it bashed a bridge and was then cut down to make a towing vehicle. It survived for years bringing in dead buses, it is now preserved. RMC1476 Hemel Hempstaed St Albans 2006 St Albans St Albans 2006 This picture could go in any of three sections... buses I have driven .... preservation .... Crosville ... where should I put it? It's here and what is the significance .... well on this occassion it was in use as my wedding vehicle, it certainly was a head turner on the day. FRM1. First time I saw this bus was in 2004, the next time was at Cobham 2006 aged 36, I was and the first time thatI had ever travelled on it. Thoughts went round my head as what could have been ..... and if only there were 2646 of these, still I managed two rides that day one up and one downstairs! Metrobus at Cobham Liverpool Corpy A36, the owner of this fine machine has spent must be near 30 years restoring this bus, having to overcome various problems along the way! It's getting there and will be a treat when it is once againin use. Wallasey 15, 3 of these early Wallasey PDR1's survive, this one undergoing restoration at the MTT site at Burscough Lancs, unfortunately a former owner took away the original registration and it now has a Bristol area one. ex St Helens Leyland Titan repatriated from Canada, if I remember rightly, seen at Burscough. 1551 doing Park & Ride duties at Woodvale, now owned by the MTT 1032 during layover at Woodvale A267 looking resplendant andposing at Woodvale Panther 1039, there maybe a whole section on this bus in the future .... at Woodvale as a private entry of about 5 buses. 1055 laying over PMT 677 Birkenhead 152 has had quite an interesting history, being the last MPTE back loader in use on the Wirral, then being sold to Lofty's.... it was eventually preserved and is seen at the Birkenhead rally. Crosville ERG52, Splendid Beast 1111 at the MTT running day to celebrate if thatis the correct word, 20 years of deregulation. 22.10.2006 MPTE 1003 now in it's Merseybus post de-reg livery 1836 passes 1003 Wallasey No1 & 1003 at the site of the former Wallasey Corporation garage in Seaview Rd, Liscard, now the site of an ASDA store. The Crow demonstrates the middle door on SNL808 SNL808 St Helen's Museum Front n/s of SNL808 DFG157 sits patiently during the evening. SNB449 in St Albans M394 St Albans not sure if this is in preservation, or still in light service MB641 in preservation, but I think that it stills sees some service. ex MPTE MCW Metrobus 0062

Arriva & First have now got their own sections. Please don't be offended by the new working title of this group ... After de-regulation all companies that were not a re-incarnation of a previous council run bus company, NBC or PTE, were known by everybody affectionately as 'The Scab Operators' a term made popular by the miners during their 1984 pit strikes. I am not slagging any of these companies off, they make things more interesting and to be honest a lot of these smaller operators can show the larger ones how to run efficiently and offer a decent service!!
